Success in the Project!

Going into this neuroscience workshop, I thought I'd be dealing with neural data. I was hoping to work with EEGs (electroencephalograms) but it turned out I could work on my own project. This was super exciting especially since I could work towards getting some preliminary results for my proposal. So, today I had a huge amount of success throughout the day! I was able to take the binned data and create separate images with it. I've termed this process "Frequency Binning" as it appears that it has not been examined too much in the past with ultrawideband (UWB) frequency. I was able to take the bins and create a composite as well as view the binned images separately. Then I was able to do a principle component analysis on my stacks of images to create another composite and series of the pca components. Using both of these stacks of image, I created change detection images. I kept that to a simple temporal differencing but it worked! Super exciting! My images came out looking a bit like space invaders, but that just cheered me up a lot. (I am not allowed to show the images here because of ethics.) I spent my evening making my plots look good so that they are easy to stick into the presentation that I need to make for Friday.

We also sat in on a deep learning lecture for the day. It became very clear why in order for deep learning to occur, you need a LOT of data. Even though it was a lecture for neuroscience, the professor brought in information about geospatial applications and autonomous cars. I find it so exciting to see the correlation between geomatics and biomedical engineering applications and how the methods we use are so similar. At this time in my career, I think I should start teaching deep learning in my remote sensing class, but I need to keep it simple for the time being. Machine Learning and Deep Learning are key topics that I need to investigate in how to implement that knowledge into my class. It seems so daunting and complex and so, well, computer science-y, but today's lecture was excellent and gave one of the best foundations to this subject that I have had in a long time.

I'm excited for tomorrow's adventure with my next idea!
